Are you ready to make a difference?

Volunteers are critical to the success of A Broken Spur Riding Academy Equine Assisted Services and are a priceless part of the therapeutic team for therapeutic riding, learning, and more. Several times throughout the year, A Broken Spur offers training to acquaint prospective volunteers with the various duties and needs we have for the program. All volunteers are eligible for Awards For Services.

A Broken Spur Riding Academy offers volunteer training throughout the year. Training is required for safety and to comply with industry standards set by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International

More Volunteer Info..

Horse leaders are responsible for the care of the horse before, during, and after the lesson. The horse leaders main responsibility during lessons is the horse. Volunteers who wish to serve as horse leaders must attend and pass a Horse Leader Training/Orientation prior to becoming a horse leader. This person should have competent knowledge of and experience working with horses. Horse leaders and side walkers provide support for riders who are not yet independent riders. By leading a horse or side-walking (similar to a spotter in gymnastics), you are making a difference for a person with special needs who would not be able to participate without your help!

Facility Help Facility volunteers join us for facility clean-up such as cleaning up debris in the pastures, burning slash piles, painting, fixing fence, spraying weeds, mowing grass and running the weed-whacker.

Feeder Volunteers Help keep our facility and stable clean and welcoming for our participants and equine staff. Feeding, turn out, cleaning pens and more are important jobs that keep our riding center clean, safe and professional.

Sidewalkers walk beside the horse in lessons and provide physical and/or emotional support to the rider while performing a form of a hold. Sidewalkers must be able to hold their arm above shoulder height and walk for a minimum of 30 minutes. Horse leaders and side walkers provide support for riders who are not yet independent riders. By leading a horse or side-walking (similar to a spotter in gymnastics), you are making a difference for a person with special needs who would not be able to participate without your help!

All Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Ages 14-15 can help with barn related volunteering. 16 and up can be lesson volunteers. Volunteers are expected to show commitment, punctuality, and respect the privacy of our clients. Volunteers should be available for a minimum of 1 hour per week for the entire session. Sessions are typically 6-8 weeks long.

Committee/Special Event

Not a horse person? You can still contribute in a variety of ways with the governance of the organization on a number of committees that sustain A Broken Spur Riding Academy and help the staff provide superior service. A Broken Spur Riding Academy is also currently seeking additional board members!

Special event volunteers help out once or twice a year for our big events. These events require many people to make them work. From taking tickets to set-up to clean-up, we appreciate the many hands that make light work, and help us benefit our communities in ways others do not

Please contact A Broken Spur Riding Academy with any questions you may have.

We couldn’t do this without the help of all of our wonderful volunteers.
